STATE 2A FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS, ROUND 2: S. Columbus rolls past Lincolnton

TABOR CITY – South Columbus High scored on its first seven possessions on Friday night, roaring past visiting Lincolnton 47-14 in the second round of the state 2A football playoffs.

Gaining an early two-score lead on TD runs by Terquan Bellamy, the fourth-seeded Stallions (12-1) eliminated the Wolves (6-7), a No. 12 seed.

South Columbus earned a third-round match-up next Friday at top-seeded Reidsville (13-0), a 39-17 winner at home on Friday night over No. 9 East Montgomery.

The Wolves’ loss left them with their first losing record since going 5-7 in 2006.

Bellamy rushed for nearly 170 yards and four TDs to lead South Columbus and Seth Buffkin had two scores and also had a 100-yard game.

The Stallions held Lincolnton’s star running back, Tyshaun Harris, to fewer than 70 yards. He did return a kickoff 67 yards for a TD.

South Columbus ran for seven scores and had nearly 385 yards rushing.

Lincolnton was behind 21-0 before it scored.

The South Columbus-Reidsville winner goes to the state semifinals on Dec. 1, with No. 3 Hendersonville (10-3) and No. 2 Mountain Heritage (12-0) in the opposite bracket. Those two teams play next Friday at Mountain Heritage.

Still alive in the East 2A bracket are No. 5 Wallace-Rose Hill (11-1), No 1 Elizabeth City Northeastern (13-0), No. 3 Southwest Onslow (10-3) and No. 2 East Bladen (12-1).

Rose Hill visits Northeastern and Southwest Onslow goes to East Bladen for third-round games next Friday.
