HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Catholic (3A), Grimsley (4A) capture state titles (summaries)

Charlotte Catholic and Greensboro Grimsley captured state varsity football championships on Friday night.

Catholic, the West No. 4 seed, edged East No. 3 Havelock 14-7 for a state 3A title at N.C. State.

Grimsley, the West 4A champ, won a battle of top seeds, winning 28-8 over Cardinal Gibbons at North Carolina.

Catholic finished 9-1 with postseason wins over Crest, A.C. Reynolds and Monroe to get to another title game.

Havelock finished 10-1.

Grimsley (11-0) had playoff wins over East Forsyth, Durham Hillside and Butler to reach the state 4A title game.
