The Northwestern Foothhills 2A schools met on Wednesday and developed a schedule for  the basketball games it feels it can get played by Feb. 19, the final night of the regular season.

The hardest hit by COVID-19 of the three local conferences, the Northwestern Foothills opened the season on Jan. 6 with all eight schools slated to play a 14-game varsity girls and boys schedule.

If the new dates hold true, only the Hibriten girls will be able to complete the full 14-game schedule, and the East Burke and Patton girls will get 13 of their games in.

West Caldwell, with two games left, will play the fewest at nine.

In boys, Bunker Hill and Draughn will get 10 games in — they each have four left — and Fred T. Foard, Patton and West Caldwell will each complete nine games.

East Burke’s boys have played four games to date and have three left, so they’ll complete half of the conference schedule.

The Northwestern Foothills 2A gets two automatic bids into the state playoffs. Currently, that would be Patton (5-0) and then a battle between Hibriten (4-2), West Caldwell (4-2), Bunker Hill (3-3) and East Burke (2-2) for the No. 2 boys bid.

With one game left, Bunker Hill’s girls (9-0) have locked up the No. 1 playoff bid. Draughn (4-2) has four games left, Fred T. Foard (5-3) has three games to go and Patton (6-4) has three games left.

Head coach Lee Swanson’s Bunker Hill girls win a league title for the first time since sharing the Midwest 2A crown in 2002-03 under Tommy Edwards. It was the fifth straight title for the Bears, who won the other four outright.

Bunker Hill’s girls play at Draughn tonight (Thursday) with an opportunity to become the first Bunker Hill girls’ team to go unbeaten in league play since the 2002-02 team (28-2, lost to Ledford in first round of West Regionals went 14-0 in the Midwest 2A.
