Draughn, East Burke join

MORGANTON – Burke County rivals Draughn, East Burke and Freedom are headed into the Freedom Christmas Invitational next week, three days of basketball with all of the games at Freedom High.
The three-day tournaments open with eight games on Wednesday, the first game tipping at 10 a.m. (East Burke versus R-S Central girls) and the eighth, Freedom’s boys against A.C. Reynolds, scheduled to tip at 8:30 p.m.
Through last Thursday, the Draughn girls were 5-4 and the Draughn boys were 8-1. Freedom’s girls were 5-0 and the boys were 4-0 while the East Burke girls were 5-2 and the boys 1-6.
Asheville Christian, last year’s girls champion – beating East Burke 60-54 – returns to this year’s tournament.
Freedom’s boys beat R-S Central also back, 85-57, in last year’s tournament final.
This year’s championship games are set for 7 p.m. (girls) and 8:30 p.m. (boys) on Dec. 28.
