Tournaments at Catawba Valley Community College start on Dec. 27

HICKORY – Bunker Hill’s girls and Maiden’s boys will go into the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic next week as the top seeds for three days of basketball battles at Catawba Valley Community College’s Tarlton Complex.
The Bunker Hill girls are off to an 8-3 start after winning just nine games a year ago under head coach Randy Joines. They face eight-seeded Maiden (2-5 through Dec. 20), in a first-round game of the Classic on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Maiden’s boys, 7-0 through Dec. 20, will battle No. 8 South Caldwell (0-4) in a first-round game on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Two of the Bunker Hill girls’ wins this season are against Maiden, 64-53 on Nov. 28 at Bunker Hill and 61-46 at Maiden on Dec. 7.
Maiden and South Caldwell played Dec. 13 in Hudson with Maiden winning 61-57.
Hickory’s girls and boys are the defending tournament champions.
The Hickory girls won last year’s event as a No. 7 seed, downing top-seeded Maiden 64-49 in the title game.
The Hickory boys were last year’s top seed and defeated No. 3 St. Stephens 66-50 for the title.
