The South Fork 2A has named its top high school basketball award winners for the season with Newton-Conover sweeping girls’ honors.
In a vote of conference coaches, Chyna Cornwell of Newton-Conover (6-foot-3 center) repeated as the league’s player of the year and her coach, Sylvia White, won Coach of the Year.
East Lincoln’s Justin Kuthan won boys’ top players and Chet Korczynski of Lake Norman was named Coach of the Year.
Cornwell, who has signed to play college basketball at Rutgers, led the Red Devils to a 14-0 record as they repeated as conference regular-season champion and also won the conference tournament.
White is in her third tenure as head coach at Newton-Conover with a career record – in nine seasons with the Red Devils – of 194-79.
Kuthan, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, helped East Lincoln finished second in the regular season race at 12-2, one game back of Lake Norman Charter. The Mustangs won the conference tournament title by beating Lake Norman Charter for the second time this season.
Korczynski is in his first season guiding the Lake Norman Charter boys, who went 13-1 in league play. They are 20-6 overall heading into the state 2A playoffs.
He coached the Lake Norman Charter girls last season (8-14) before shifting to coaching the boys this season.
