HICKORY – On a night of big plays and big point totals, Hickory High running back Cody Young ultimately couldn’t be matched.

Young, making his sixth start of the season, broke the school record for single-game rushing yardage with 361 yards, tied the mark for single-game TDs (7), and scored the game-winner with 17 seconds to play as HHS nipped visiting South Caldwell 55-54.

After the Spartans (2-7, 1-4) went up 54-49 with 1:50 to play on a 25-yard run by Isaiah Kirby, Young scored on a fourth-and-goal play from the South Caldwell 6. He ran right, cut back left and got past the defense for the victory.

Hickory (5-4, 3-2) goes into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. game at Alexander Central tied for third place in the Northwestern 3A-4A behind Watauga and Freedom.

Young tied the TD record of seven set in 1928 by Pinkie James and in 2007 by Darrien Burch, who had runs of 28, 10, 81, 23, 21, 62 and 18 yards in a 74-20 home victory over West Caldwell (he ran 14 times for 295 yards in a 2,208-yard season).

The game featured just shy of 1,285 yards of total offense, with South Caldwell rushing for 571 and finishing with 744 yards of total offense.

Hickory led 28-16 after one quarter and 35-30 at the half, and the Spartans went into the final quarter leading 46-42.

Young’s scoring runs were for 4, 6, 77 and 31 yards in the first quarter, for 21 yards in the third quarter and for 8 yards before the game-winning 6-yard run.

Hickory improved to 11-10 under head coach Russell Stone, who collected career win No. 273, and the Red Tornadoes virtually hold their own fate in their hands the rest of the way. After playing at Alexander Central, the Red Tornadoes face St. Stephens at Barger Stadium on Nov. 2 to close the regular season.
