HICKORY – Hickory High senior Jackson Bell has signed to play basketball for Lee University in Tennessee.
Bell averaged 15 points and eight rebounds last season, when the Red Tornadoes went 27-3 under head coach Andy Poplin.
“Jackson Bell is easily one of the finest young men I have had the privilege of coaching,” Poplin said in a Hickory Public Schools press release. “He averaged 15 points and eight rebounds this year but his character was more important to our team than the stats he posted.
“He was one of the backbones of our team culture. We created five pillars to build our culture around: thankfulness, unity, humility, servanthood and passion. Jackson was a leader every day in establishing our pillars.
“ He was often unselfish to a fault, always trying to make sure other players got their share. He plays the game with great passion, often taking defensive charges and pounding the floor and yelling with excitement. He was always asking for high fives, to help our team build unity…
“I believe Jackson will have a great career at Lee University. I fully expect for him to add big time contributions right away to the basketball program…”
Bell begins school at Lee University, located in Cleveland, Tenn., in mid-August.
The Flames play NCAA Division II basketball in the Gulf South Conference. They were 16-12 last season.
