Hayden Deal made his second relief appearance of the season on Thursday night, helping the Mississippi Braves edge visiting Biloxi (Miss.) 5-4 in a Double-A game.
Deal, appearing in his 17th game after making 15 starts, pitched 2 2/3 innings as the second Braves pitcher. He allowed no hits, no runs, no walks and struck out one.
He is 3-2 with an ERA of 2.56 this season, and is 20-15 in his pro career with an ERA of 3.05 and 273 strikeouts in 307 innings.
Deal, a former star left-hander at Bandys High and Presbyterian (S.C.) in college, has thrown 78 1/3 innings this season and struck out 65.
On Thursday night, he faced nine batters and threw strikes on 18 of his 24 pitches.
Mississippi is 51-36 and leads the Double-A South’s South Division over Montgomery (Ala.) by 2 1/2 games.
The series against Biloxi continues Friday and through the weekend at Mississippi.
