ROME, Ga. – Hayden Deal is in Rome (Ga.), so he simply did what he’s been doing to pick up his first Class A baseball victory.

Deal — promoted to the Braves from the Gulf Coast League Braves on Wednesday — drove to Rome and got the bullpen call to go into Wednesday night’s game.

He pitched four innings in relief of Jeremy Walker, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out four in Rome’s 5-1 victory over Lexington (Ky.)

A left-hander who starred at Bandys High and then Presbyterian College, Deal was signed to a free agent contract and reported to the GCL Braves within 48 hours of signing.

Deal got into 12 games with the GCL Braves, a rookie league team in Bradenton, Fla. He went 2-2 with an ERA of 4.30 and two saves, pitching 23 innings, walking eight and striking out 19. Opponents hit .284 against him.

Rome (69-59, 31-27 second half) is trying to catch Charleston (S.C.) in the South Atlantic League (SAL) Southern Division race. The Braves are in second place, five games back.

There are only 11 games left in the SAL regular-season.

Rome faces Lexington in Rome on Thursday night, then plays Greensboro over the weekend. After having Monday off, the Braves play Tuesday through next Thursday at Greenville (S.C) and close the regular season at home Sept. 1-4 with games against Columbia (S.C.).
