CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Hayden Deal had s good Sunday game in a short relief stint for the Mississippi Braves.
Deal, a former star left-hander at Bandys High and Presbyterian (S.C.), threw 1 1/3 innings and struck out one in a 2-1 Double A loss to the Lookouts.
Deal threw strikes on 12 of 17 pitches and faced four batters before a crowd of 3,123.
He is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.69 this season, throwing 5 1/3 innings in three games with seven strikeouts.
Deal has pitched in 121 pro career games, striking out 340 in 381 1/3 innings.
The Braves are at home through Sunday against Montgomery (Ala.), a series that started on Monday. Deal has not pitched in the first two games of the series.
He was signed as a free agent after a tryout at Bandys after his college career at Presbyterian (S.C.) ended), and is in his sixth season of actual minor league pitching (missed 2020 when COVID wiped out the minor league year).
He has been both a starter and reliever in the pros.
Last season, he went 3-2 for Mississippi with an ERA of 4.12, pitching 59 innings with 26 walks and 53 strikeouts. He had two saves.
