Hayden Deal continues to pitch well for the Mississippi Braves, including a solid three-inning stint in Sunday’s 9-5 home loss to Chattanooga (Tenn.).
A left-hander out of Bandys High, Deal threw in his fifth game of the season. He has pitched 13.1 innings, walking seven and striking out 14, and his ERA is 1.35.
On Sunday, he threw strikes on 23 of his 47 pitches before a crowd of 1,843. He allowed two hits, no runs, walked two and struck out two.
Mississippi is 4-11 and in last place in the Southern League South. The Braves start a six-game series on Tuesday night at Montgomery (Ala.).
Deal is climbing toward 300 strikeouts as pro; he has 294 in 330 1/3 innings, and he is drawing a degree of notice from the Atlanta Braves.
On April 4, he was listed on the Braves’ transactions as assigned to the major league team. Deal’s mom, Jewell, told HobbsDailyReport.com her son was in the bullpen that day when the Braves played a spring training game against Toronto.
Deal did not pitch in that game against the Blue Jays, and the Braves then left spring training to get ready to start the season on April 7 against Cincinnati and sent Deal to Double A Mississippi.
Since it was a spring training game, Deal has not yet reached the major leagues.
