East 0, West 0, called after a bit more than 28 minutes of play due to severe weather in Greensboro.

GREENSBORO – The East and West played to a scoreless tie on Tuesday night, finishing in just shy of 30 minutes on the field because of rain and lightning at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex.

The match was called after 28 minutes, 12 seconds because of severe weather at Macpherson Stadium.

The West — coached by Newton-Conover High’s Angelo Palozzi — had Madelyn Becker of Newton-Conover (defender) in the starting lineup, and Jovanna Rameriz Sanchez of Hickory also played for the West.

The East outshot the West 4-1 and had the only corner kicks (2) of the match.

A crowd of 200 saw the East’s Natasha Turner (Carrboro), Abbey Campbell (Wilmington New Hanover), Haley Garrett (Cardinal Gibbons) and Brianna Kropinack (Swansboro) each take a shot, and Garrett had the only shot on goal for the East.

For the West, which had no shots on goal, Meaghan Quinn (South Iredell) took the only shot.

Lillian Dunn (Green Hope) was in goal for the West for 18:25 and Madison McNally (Wake Forest) was in goal for 9:47.

An MVP was not selected for the match.

The match ended in a tie for the third time in the last seven seasons, the previous ties coming in 2012 (11-1) and 2013 (2-2). The West won the next two years – 4-1 and 2-1 – and the East won the 2016 match 2-1.

The North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA) added girls’ soccer to All-Star Week in 1992.
