EAST-WEST BOYS SOCCER: Chase star scores 2, wins MVP in West victory

GREENSBORO – Led by Chase High’s Preston Walker, the West All-Stars scored twice in each half on Tuesday night to beat the East 4-1 in the East-West boys’ soccer match at the Bryan Soccer Complex.

Walker, a 5-foot-8, 140-pound forward, scored unassisted at the 36:58 mark at MacPherson Stadium to put the West ahead 2-0. He scored another unassisted goal at the 66:30 mark to extend the West’s lead to three goals.

Walker was named the match MVP.

Reed Hunnicutt of South Mecklenburg also scored twice for the West with his first, a header from about 12 yards, coming at 14:39 on an assist by Walker.

Hunnicutt had the other West goal early in the second half, scoring from about 16 yards off an assist by Tyson Hichman (West Henderson).

The East’s only goal came at the 64:37 mark when Sam Linker (Chapel Hill) beat the West goalkeeper to the far post from about 10 yards via an assist by Declan Payne of Wilmington New Hanover.

The West outshot the East 13-11 and had seven corner kicks to the East’s four.

Hunnicutt, Michael Davidson (Weddington) and Hichman each had two shots and Walker had a team-high three.

While the West had seven shots on goal — led by Walker and Hunnicutt with two each — the East had only three – one each by Cadence Tootle (Swansboro), Linker and Dashaun Brown (White Oak).

Seth O’Neal (Southern Alamance) was in goal for nearly 41 minutes for the West and Kenneth Gentry (Mount Tabor) was in goal for 39:11. Each goalie had a save.

For the East, Gray Sutter (Clinton) was in goal for all 80 minutes, making three saves.

The West won for the second time in three years. Two years ago, the West won 4-1 and the East won 2-1 in 2016.

In the last six matches, each half of the state has won three times.
