GREENSBORO – The East won 20-17 — driving 80 yards for a go-ahead score and delivering two sacks when the West had the ball last — but a Lenoir-Rhyne University signee had a big game for the West on Wednesday night in the East-West All-Star football game.

Before a crowd of 5,137 at Greensboro Grimsley High’s Jamieson Stadium, wide receiver Tyshun Odom of Crest had a game-best six catches for 59 yards and he caught a TD pass early in the fourth quarter that had the West ahead 17-13.

ODOM

Odom, an incoming freshman at LRU, had a 10-yard reception in a drive near the end of the third quarter. That drive carried into the fourth quarter, when Odom caught a 26-yard TD pass from Chris Reynolds (Davie County) and Andrew Wall’s PAT made it West 17, East 13 with 11 minutes, three seconds to play.

The East then ate 5:16 off the clock with a 13-play drive to regain the lead. All 13 players were rushes – quarterback Ryheem Skinner (Clinton) ran for 41 yards – and Skinner capped the drive with a 15-yard scoring run with 5:33 to play. An extra point by Noel Ruiz (Wilson Fike) put the West down by seven points.

After the West punted, its defense made a stop on a fourth-and-6 play at the West 11 to gain possession. Zack Anderson (Chase) made the first hit on that play.

Taking over with 1:16 to play, the West was at its 38 with 22 seconds to play. The next two plays ran out the clock — a 5-yard loss of Reynolds on a sack by Shaundre Mims (West Craven) and a 19-yard loss on a sack of Reynolds by Artavious Richardson (Rocky Mount).

Skinner, who rushed for 94 yards on 17 carries, was named the game’s offensive MVP.

Eastern Guilford’s James Artis, who had six tackles and eight assists for the West, won the MVP award on defense.

The East had 324 yards of offense to 164 for the West, which had only 27 rushing yards on 30 attempts.

Four area players were in the West starting lineup for head coach Greg Lloyd (Kings Mountain), with Cooper Short (Kings Mountain) starting on the offensive line and Odom starting at wide receiver. Area defensive starters were Aaron Jolly, a defensive back from Shelby, and Anderson.

Hibriten’s Chris Scott was credited with one tackle.

Lloyd’s coaching staff included Devore Holman Sr., the new head coach at West Caldwell who was selected while coaching at Davie County.

The game was scoreless until Jonte McMullen (Northside-Jacksonville) scored from the 1 with 8:32 to go in the second quarter. The only other first-half scoring was a 25-yard field goal by Wall just 29 seconds before the half.

The West got a 50-yard TD on a blocked field goal return by Cinsere Allison (A.L. Brown) to get its first lead. About four minutes later, it was 13-10 East after a 13-yard TD run by Jo Leake (West Montgomery).
