EAST-WEST GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wake Forest signee leads East to 3-point victory

GREENSBORO – Led by Wake Forest signee Alexandria Scruggs, a 6-foot forward from Fayettevlle E.E. Smith, the East All-Stars nipped the West 81-78 on Monday night in girls’ basketball at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Scruggs was named MVP of the annual seniors-only game sponsored by the North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA), scoring 20 points while missing just five field goals. She also added an East-best eight rebounds.

Kendal Moore, a 5-6 guard from Pine Forest who will next play at N.C. State, had 17 points and was the only other East player in double figures.

Scruggs averaged 26.2 points and 12.8 rebounds for E.E. Smith last season.

The East broke an 18-all tie through one quarter by outscoring the West 30-17 in the second quarter to lead 48-35 at halftime.

Madison Bailey — a guard from Freedom who was the only player on the West roster from a Greater Hickory area conference — made one of three 3-pointers and scored three points.

The West leader was Elle Sutphin, a 6-3 forward from East Surry who is skipping her senior year of high school to enroll and play at N.C. State. She had 17 points, with Lyrick Thorne of Ledford adding 16, Janiya Downs of South Rowan adding 12 and Mount Airy’s Shaunae Sawyers scoring 10.
