GREENSBORO – A top incoming recruit for Lenoir-Rhyne University will play Monday night for the West in the annual East-West All-Star Game at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Mason Hawks, a 6-foot-1 guard from North Surry High, is on the 10-player West roster selected by head coach Sean Vestal of North Forsyth and assistant coach Brian Franklin of McDowell.

The West roster also includes a South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A star, guard Quay Kimble of Shelby.

All East-West players were seniors in 2017.

The boys’ game is Monday night at about 8 p.m. (following a 6:30 p.m. girls’ game) and is part of the North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA) East-West Clinic Week.

Players reported to Greensboro on Saturday and were to practice twice on Saturday. The West has a morning and afternoon practice on Sunday at Southwest Guilford High.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with advance packages available in advance by calling the NCCA at (336) 379-9095.

MASON HAWKS, NORTH SURRY

Signed an athletic grant-in-aid with Lenoir-Rhyne University, where he will major in business…wants to pursue a career as a basketball coach… Coached by Kevin King…as senior, named all-conference, all-district, All-Northwest 2A and was conference tournament MVP… averaged 21 points, six assists, two steals…scored 1,500 career points and had school-record career 550 assists…as junior, averaged 19 points, six assists… as sophomore, was all-conference after averaging 10 points and five assists.

“I feel I will gain a little more experience for playing college ball by playing against the best players in the state of North Carolina.”

QUAY KIMBLE, SHELBY

Coached by Aubrey Hollifield…as senior, named All-South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A and was the league’s Player of the Year, plus third-team all-state by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA)… averaged 25.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists…scored 1,813 career points and set school record with 114 3-pointers…Special Recognition from Speaker of the House Tim Moore…wants to major in psychology…wants to pursue a career as a state trooper or a psychiatrist…
