EAST-WEST BOYS BASKETBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne recruit scores 14 for West in loss

GREENSBORO – Lenoir-Rhyne University signee Mason Hawks scored 14 points and Shelby High’s Quay Kimble added 12 on Monday night but it wasn’t enough as the East beat the West 117-108 in the East-West All-Star basketball game at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Hawks, from North Surry High, hit four of seven field goals and four of six free throws for his points, while Kimble made four of his 11 field goal attempts and two of three free throws.

The East had back-to-back 32-point quarters in the second half to wipe out a 60-53 halftime deficit.

Four East players reached double figures, led by Juquan Miles of Northhampton County and Tyrell Kirk of Whiteville.

Kirk was named the game’s MVP after scoring 18 points that included four 3-pointers, and Miles hit three 3-pointers and scored 18 points.

Reggie Davis of Northwest Guilford scored a game-high 24 points for the West, which was outscored 32-19 by the East in the third quarter.

The game, traditionally high-scoring, featured 179 shots and 50 free throws.

The West coaching staff included McDowell boys’ head coach Brian Franklin, a multiple sport star for the Titans during his own playing career.
