GREENSBORO – The West swept the East on Monday night in the annual East-West All-Star basketball games at the Greensboro Coliseum, the girls winning 62-55 and the boys winning 92-90.

MANGUM

The West girls, coached by Brad Mangum, wiped out an early nine-point deficit – pulling within one point by halftime – and had a 27-point fourth quarter to win.

It was Mangum’s first game since coaching at North Lincoln last season. He then took a job in private business. His North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA) East-West bio says he will be a varsity boys’ assistant this season at Maiden.

The three West girls from Greater Hickory area leagues – Hickory’s Gabriela Greenard, Olivia Miller of South Caldwell and Alexander Central’s Julianna Walter — combined to provide 16 points on 4-of-18 shooting and hitting seven of eight free throws. Walter made one 3-pointer.

Walter was one of three double-figure scorers for the West with 10 points, Greenard scored two points ad Miller added four points.

Game MVP Kate Hollifield of Shelby scored a game-high 18 points, converting 4-of-6 from 3-point range, to lead the West. Lake Norman’s Aly Wadkovski grabbed a game-best 15 rebounds for the West.

Jerni Kiaku (Garner) and Laney Beale (Chapel Hill) led the East with nine points each.
