GREENSBORO – Brad Mangum is returning to coaching girls’ high school basketball Monday night on the big stage.

Mangum — who coached the North Lincoln girls last season – is head coach of the West in the annual East-West All-Star game, which tips at 6:30 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.

MANGUM

He’s had a bit of a rollercoaster ride since being named West head coach for the 2021 game, one he missed because of a need to provide care for his wife when she got COVID.

The North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA), which sponsors the games as part of its East-West Week, asked Mangum to coach the West in 2022.

An NCCA official said as long as a coached worked with a team the year before, he or she is eligible to fill the role when again available. After last season, Mangum left North Lincoln for a job in private business.

Although there has been no announcement by the school, NCCA officials noted in their bio information on Mangum that he will be a boys’ varsity assistant coach this season at Maiden.

Mangum and his West coaching staff originally selected two girls from the Greater Hickory area’s conferences for the West roster – Hickory forward Gabriela Greenard and Alexander Central guard Julianna Walter.

When a player dropped out earlier, the West added Bunker Hill’s Oliva Ellis, who then dropped out of the game (the NCCA provided no details), and Mangum added Olivia Miller of South Caldwell.

Magnum has been a fixture in local girls’ basketball, first coaching as an assistant at South Caldwell (his alma mater). He left Hudson to become head girls’ coach at Fred T. Foard in 2011-2012.

After two seasons at Foard, he moved to coaching girls at Alexander Central (2013-2014 through 2015-2016), then joined the women’s coaching staff at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

He returned to prep coaching in 2017-18, spending three years as head coach at West Caldwell, and became head coach at North Lincoln in 2020-2021.

Mangum has an overall record of 124-123 in 10 seasons, highlighted by a 32-21 record at Foard and 70-17 record at Alexander Central that left him at 102-38 in his first five seasons.

The all-star boys’ game follows the girls’ game on Monday, and no players or coaches from area conferences were selected to participate.
