HAYDEN DEAL (Class A Rome, Ga.)

Rome edged visiting Columbia (S.C.) 7-2 on Wednesday before 1,595 but former Bandys High and Presbyterian College left-hander Hayden Deal did not pitch.

His most recent appearance was last Sunday when the Braves defeated visiting Charleston (S.C.), pitching one inning in relief.

Throwing strikes on 15 of his 25 pitches and facing four batters, Deal gave up no hits. He walked one and struck out two in relief of winning pitcher Huasacar Ynoa, who threw six innings.

It was Deal’s 20th appearance of the season. He has made four starts, the last coming June 17 in a victory at Augusta (Ga.).

Deal is 5-1 with an ERA of 1.86, pitching 58 innings this season. He’s hit four batters, intentionally walked one and walked 10 to go with 62 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .194 against him this season.

In his last 10 outings, he’s 2-1 with an ERA of 1.72, pitching 36 2/3 innings with five walks and 30 strikeouts.

The Braves are 55-47 overall and 15-18 in the second-half SAL Southern Division standings (fifth place, 3 ½ games behind division-leading Greenville (S.C.).

Rome won a first-half title, securing a postseason berth.

ZACH JARRETT (Class A Delmarva, Md.)

Delmarva’s doubleheader on Wednesday at Hagerstown (Md.) was wiped out by rain. The games will not be made up.

The Shorebirds and Suns play two games on Thursday, the first at 5:05 p.m. The second game is a makeup from a game rained out on Monday night.

Delmarva last played on Sunday, and Zach Jarrett — a former star at Hickory High and in college at Charlotte — had one hit and one RBI as the Shorebirds split a home doubleheader against Greensboro.

In 93 games this season, Jarrett is hitting .293 with 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 54 RBIs. He’s hitting .220 in his last 10 games with two home runs and six RBIs.

Jarrett has 104 hits, third-best in the SAL behind Bret Boswell of Asheville (106) and Chad Spanberger of Asheville (110).

Delmarva is 53-44 and 18-12 in the second half in the SAL Northern Division standings.

The Shorebirds share second place with Hickory in the second-half standings, both two games back of Lakewood, N.J.

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md.)

Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey is recoving from a shoulder injury sustained while trying to maneuver away from a foul ball into the dugout on a day he was not pitching.

When he twisted to avoid being struck by the ball, his right shoulder popped out of socket.

Harvey is now throwing some and is expected to pitch in a game in Florida on Aug. 4.

He was scratched from his 10th start (June 8).

Harvey is 1-2 with 32 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 36 hits, 20 runs (all earned), walked eight and struck out 30. His ERA is 5.57.

Bowie finished last in the first-half West Division of the Eastern League, 8 ½ games back of division winner Akron (Ohio).

The Baysox won 10-5 on Wednesday night at Binghamton (N.Y.) before 3,459, improving to 47-55 overall in the Eastern League. They are in last place, 13 ½ games behind league-leading Akron (Ohio).
