HICKORY – The Hickory Crawdads are ready to celebrate what would have been the 70th birthday of the city’s late mayor, Rudy Wright.

The club announced Monday it’s working with the Wright family and Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley to hold Rudy Wright Night on July 6 at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The special event will come before the Crawdads play a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball game that night at 7 p.m. against Kannapolis. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

The Wright family will attend to reminisce and tell their favorite Rudy Wright stories. Ulysses Long will sing the national anthem.

During the game, an official announcement about “The Rudy Project” — a special partnership between the Wright Family and Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley – will be made. There will also be educational information available concerning mental illness, depression and suicide.

Wright, mayor of Hickory since 2001, was found dead in his Hickory home on May 11.

“We are honored to host a celebration of life to remember a true champion for the city of Hickory, a great family man and a Crawdads fan from the first pitch in 1993,” Crawdads General Manager Mark Seaman said in a press release. “This is an opportunity to take an unfortunate situation and provide something positive.”

To kick off fundraising efforts for The Rudy Project, special ticket vouchers are available at multiple locations throughout Hickory. They’re redeemable at the Crawdads’ ticket office for a discounted $6 ticket ($3 off regular price) to the July 6 game.

For every voucher redeemed, the Crawdads will donate $4 to The Rudy Project.

Vouchers may be picked up at Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley, Hickory Metro Convention Center, City Hall, A Sign Co, the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce and the McDonald’s in Hickory.
