CRAWDADS: Santos drives in 5 as ‘Hoppers win, gain tie for first

GREENSBORO – Jhonny Santos sank the Crawdads on Sunday, driving in five runs to lead Greensboro to a 5-2 win that pulled the Grasshoppers into a tie for the lead in the South Atlantic League (SAL) Northern Division.

Santos had a two-run triple in the fourth inning, a two-run double in the sixth inning and a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Greensboro (68-54, 31-23) meets the Crawdads (59-67, 32-24) on Monday at 1:13 p.m. in a series finale with the winner moving into sole possession of first place.

Hagerstown (Md.) is 29-25 in the second half and West Virginia is 30-26, both two games out of first place. Both lost on Sunday, the Suns to Kannapolis 3-2 and the Power to Greenville (S.C.) 7-1.

In Greensboro, the Crawdads had just six hits — two by Anderson Tejeda — and the Grasshoppers had nine with Trenton Hill going 4-for-4 and scoring three runs.

Greensboro starter Kolton Mahoney (6-5) worked seven innings to get a win. He gave up five hits, two runs (both earned), walked one and struck out two. Chad Smith registered his sixth save of the season, striking out two in the one inning he pitched.

Walker Weickel (4-4) took the loss for Hickory, going 5 2/3 innings (five hits, four runs, two walks, seven strikeouts).

A crowd of 4,608 endure 91-degree temperatures, watching Greensboro go up 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Crawdads tied it at 2 in the fifth inning when Tejeda hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, with Charles Leblanc on base via a single.

Scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Grasshoppers took the lead for good.

After closing a series in Greensboro, the Crawdads head to Delmarva (Md.) for games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (all 7:05 p.m. starts).

Hickory is at home for a three-game series that begins Friday night, facing Columbia (S.C.).
