CRAWDADS: Power jumps to big early lead, pounds visiting Hickory

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – West Virginia scored nine of its runs in the first four innings Sunday en route to a 10-3 home victory over Hickory in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball.

Before a crowd of 1,119, the Power improved to 36-41 overall and is 6-5 in the second half of the Northern Division race, tied for third place with the Crawdads (33-48, 5-6).

Albert Baur and Kevin Mahala each hit home runs for the Power, which had 13 hits. Baur hit a solo short in the fourth, his fourth of the year, and Mahala’s second of the year came in the seventh inning.

Trae Arbet went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Garrett Brown went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for West Virginia, which led 7-0 through three innings before adding two runs in the fourth inning for a 9-0 lead.

The Crawdads had nine hits that included two each by Leody Taveras, Carlos Garay, Richardo Valencia and Yeyson Yrizzari. Garay drove in a run with a solo home run, his first of the year, in the sixth inning.

West Virginia touched Hickory starter Sal Mendez (4-5) for 12 hits, nine runs (all earned) and he walked three and struck out two.

Eduardo Vera, the Power starter, gained a win. He pitched six innings, gave up six hits, one run (earned) and he walked none and struck out three.

The Power and Crawdads will break their division tie in a series finale on Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Charleston, W. Va.

Hickory’s next homestand begins with a three-game set against Kannapolis. The opener is Tuesday at 7 p.m., with games on Wednesday and Thursday also starting at 7 p.m.

Delmarva (Md.) visits Hickory for four games, starting on Friday at 7 p.m., with the other games set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, 5 p.m. on Sunday and noon on July 10.

The popular Fireworks Nights are Tuesday and Friday.

On Thursday, it will be Rudy Wright Night at L.P. Frans Stadium as the team pays tribute to the late Hickory mayor.
