CRAWDADS: Perez, Valencia selected to play in SAL All-Star Game

HICKORY – The Hickory Crawdads have two players – utility outfielder Yanio Perez and catcher Ricky Valencia – headed to the South Atlantic League (SAL) All-Star Game on June 20 in Columbia, S.C.

SAL officials released rosters, Northern and Southern Division, for the league’s 58th All-Star Game on Tuesday.

Perez and Valencia were selected for the Northern Division team.

Perez, 21, has been one of the most consistent hitters in the SAL this season. He’s currently tied for third in home runs (9), batting average (.333), and on-base percentage (.972) and has at least one hit in 32 of the 43 games he’s played in.

VALENCIA

A native of Cuba, Perez has 14 multi-hit games through Monday that includes an eight-game hitting streak earlier this season. He was signed as an international free agent in 2016.

Perez was named the SAL Player of the Week on April 30 after a week in which he hit .609 with five home runs, 14 hits, 30 total bases and 13 RBIs over a seven-game stretch.

Valencia, 24 and a native of Venezuela, is batting .286 with three home runs, eight doubles and 15 RBIs. Through Monday, he had a hit in 23 of the 30 games he’s played in with seven multi-hit games, and has thrown out 20 percent of would-be base stealers this season.
