CRAWDADS: Outlast Intimidators, win 5-4 to open current 7-game homestand

HICKORY – Walker Weickel waltzed through his seven innings, and the Hickory Crawdads held off Kannapolis 5-4 on Tuesday night in a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball game that drew 5,525 to L.P. Frans Stadium.

Weickel (2-1) got a win after checking the Intimidators on two hits. He gave up no runs, walked one and struck out five.

He worked with an early three-run lead after the Crawdads (35-48, 8-5 second half) scored those runs in the fourth inning. They got their final run in the fifth inning, and Kannapolis (43-38, 4-9) scored all of its runs in the ninth inning.

Game 2 of the series is Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Batting cleanup on Tuesday night, Tanner Gardner went 3-for-4 and scored twice for Hickory and Yeyson Yrizarri had two doubles among his three hits and drove in two runs. Blaine Prescott had two hits for the Crawdads, including a solo home run in the third inning (his fourth of the season).

Christian Torres came on in the ninth inning to get the final two outs and earn his third save of the season for the Crawdads.

Micker Alfredo and Aaron Schnurbsch each had two hits for Kannapolis, which had five, and Grant Massey drove in two runs.

The Intimidators’ starter, Yelmison Peralta (0-2) took the loss after throwing 2 2/3 innings. He gave up eight hits, four runs (all earned), walked one and struck out two.

The win helped Hickory stay tied with Delmarva (Md.) for second place in the Northern Division standings, two games back of Hagerstown (Md).

Kannapolis is in last place in the Northern Division, trailing Hagerstown by six games.
