GREENVILLE, S.C. – All the scoring was at the start on Monday as Greenville (S.C.) nipped visiting Hickory 3-1 in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball.

Playing the final game of a series with an 11:30 a.m. start, the Crawdads scored in the opening inning and the Drive then scored three runs. After that, the game was scoreless.

Greenville (53-40, 12-12 second half) is five games back of Charleston, W. Va., in the Southern Division, and Hickory is again tied with Hagerstown (Md.) for first place in the Northern Division.

The Crawdads, off on Tuesday, are 41-54 overall and 14-11 in the second half and knotted with the Suns (13-10 second half), who beat Lexington (Ky.) 8-6 on Monday.

Hickory’s next game, at home Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium, starts a seven-game home stretch. Asheville arrives for three games first, followed by the Drive for a four-game series that begins Saturday night.

Monday’s highlight for the Crawdads was the first home run of the season for Brallan Perez, a solo shot in the first inning. Hickory finished with three other hits – one each by Ricardo Valencia, Yohel Pozo and Blaine Prescott (triple).

Tyler Hill and Tucker Tubbs each had two hits for Greenville, which had nine, with Hill, Bobby Dalbec and Granger Studdard each drive in a run in the first inning.

Jhonathan Diaz (4-3), the Drive starter, got a win after working six innings. He gave up three hits, one run (earned), walked two and struck out five. Hunter Smith earned his seventh save of the season, throwing strikes on 10 of his 14 pitches over an inning, and striking out two.

The pitching loss went to Walker Weickel (2-2) after he gave up seven hits, three runs (one earned), walked none and struck out three over 3 2/3 innings for the Crawdads.
