CRAWDADS: Drive heads out of town with 5-3 win at L.P. Frans Stadium

HICKORY – Greenville (S.C.) had 12 hits – three by Rolandi Baldwin and two each by four other players – en route to a 5-3 victory over Hickory on Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Ryan Scott, Chris Madera, Tyler Spoon and Steven Reveles each had two hits, with Scott driving in two runs and Baldwin, Spoon and Reveles each driving in one, in a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball win before 1,725 fans.

Greenville (36-23), the SAL Southern Division leader by three games over Columbia (S.C.), didn’t trail after scoring twice in the fourth inning to gain a 2-1 lead.

As they begin a four-game series against Lexington (Ky.) on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Frans, the Crawdads (23-37) remain in last place in the SAL’s Northern Division. They are 11 ½ games behind division-leading Hagerstown (Md.).

Franklin Rollin had two hits and an RBI and Anderson Tejeda had two hits for Hickory, which finished with eight hits and made three errors. Jose Almonte hit a home run for the Crawdads, his fourth of the season, in the third inning.

Jhonathan Diaz (2-0) went five innings, giving up five hits, three runs (all earned) with no walks and eight strikeouts to gain a win for the Drive. Pat Goetze then pitched two scoreless innings, throwing strikes on 23 of his 32 pitches, before Hildemaro Requena gained his third save of the season (two innings, three hits, no runs, a walk, four strikeouts).

Sal Mendez, the Crawdads’ starter, dropped to 3-3 with a loss. He pitched five innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (all earned). He struck out one and walked two.

The SAL’s first-half is heading down the stretch. After playing Lexington on Friday night, the Crawdads face the Legends at 6 p.m. Saturday, at 3 p.m. on Sunday and at 6 p.m. on Monday in their final first-half homestand.

After finishing the Lexington series, the Crawdads to go Greensboro for games Tuesday through Thursday. Next Friday, they’ll start a three-game series at Lakewood, N.J.

The SAL All-Star Game is June 20 in Columbia, S.C.
