Burke County, behind Tripp Causby’s pitching and Will Kirk reaching base five times, dealt visiting Hickory Post 48 its third straight American Legion baseball loss on Thursday night.

At Shuey Field in Morganton, Causby struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings in a 7-1 Area IV victory.

The win left Burke County at 4-5 and Post 48 is 1-6 after consecutive losses to Taylorsville, Cherryville and Post 21.

Shea Maske went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Joel Gosda had a hit and scored a run to lead Hickory.

Devin Purdue took the loss for Post 48, which next plays on Monday at 7 p.m. against Lincoln County at East Lincoln High.

Burke County is not scheduled to play again until June 16, when it visits Taylorsville for a 7 p.m. game.

Cherryville 8, Maiden 0: At Cherryville, Dalton Brooks struck out seven over seven innings and Robbie Cowie had a solo home run to lead Pot 100’s victory.

Cowie’s home run came in the third inning.

Maiden, which next plays Saturday at home (7 p.m.) against Mint Hill, dropped to 3-6 and has lost six in a row since opening the season with a doubleheader sweep at Huntersville and a win at Kings Mountain.

Huntersville, Haywood County drop out: Huntersville and Haywood County will not complete their scheduled games in Area IV, The Gaston Gazette reported.

The Gazette story said Area IV officials are working on how that decision will impact the rest of the Area IV schedule. Most teams have games scheduled through June 29.

Here’s a list of games for Greater Hickory area teams that still had games against Huntersville and Haywood County on their schedule: Burke County, at Haywood County on June 17; Hickory, Haywood County in Newton, doubleheader; Lincoln County, Huntersville at home on June 19; Taylorsville, Haywood County at home, doubleheader, June 25.
