CRAWDADS: Carry big bats again, smash Suns to gain first place

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Crawdads continued to carry some sizzlin’ sticks on Tuesday night.

A night after scoring a season-best 16 runs on 18 hits, they scorched Hagerstown (Md.) 10-1 to take over first place in the South Atlantic League (SAL) Northern Division before 605 fans.

Hickory has scored 26 runs and collected 33 hits over the past two games and finishes a series against the Suns (58-437, 20-16 second half) on Wednesday at 10:35 a.m.

On Tuesday night, Hickory had 15 hits — four by Andretty Cordero – and had three pitchers combine on a four-hitter to improve to 49-59, 22-16.

The Crawdads are a game ahead of Hagerstown (58-47, 20-17) with Delmarva (Md.) and Greensboro part of a tight race for the second-half title.

Kannapolis beat Delmarva 11-6 on Tuesday night while Lakewood (N.J.) downed Greensboro 11-2.

Hickory jumped to a 5-0 lead by the third inning in Hagerstown and stretched that to 9-0 by the top of the sixth inning.

Cordero, batting third in the order, had three doubles and an RBI for the Crawdads with Yohel Pozo going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Charles Leblanc had three hits (double, home run) and Anderson Tejeda added two RBIs.

The Suns got only four hits off Crawdads starter Reiver Sanmartin, a left-hander making his first Hickory start, and relievers Edgar Arredeno and Demarcus Evans.

SANMARTIN

Sanmartin, who was promoted from Spokane, Wash., threw six innings. He allowed two hits, no runs, walked none and struck out five. In his last 10 outings, he is 4-1 with an ERA of 1.82 with 36 strikeouts and four walks.

Arrendeno threw two innings (and 19 strikes on 24 pitches) and struck out five with Evans allowing two hits in the lone inning he pitched.

Pozo opened Hickory’s scoring with a run-scoring single in the first inning. Leblanc’s leadoff home run in the second, his second of the year, made it 2-0.

Tejeda’s two-run double highlighted a three-run third inning that had the Crawdads in front 5-0.

In the sixth inning, Cordero and Alex Kowzlczyk had RBI singles and Pozo had a two-run double – all with two outs – to make it 9-0.

James Bourque (5-6) took the loss for Hagerstown, going five innings. He gave up seven hits, five runs (all earned), walked three and struck out six.

After playing the Suns on Wednesday morning, the Crawdads head home for two series. The first starts Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Lexington (Ky.) for four games and then Greensboro arrives to play a three-game series.
