CRAWDADS: Asheville nips Hickory in second game of SAL series

HICKORY – In a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball game where all the scoring came in the first two innings, Asheville nipped Hickory 3-2 before 2,125 on Friday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The Tourists (20-26) scored two runs in the top of the first inning and the Crawdads scored two in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning, Asheville scored a run and made it hold up the rest of the way to win Game 2 of a four-game series.

The third game is Saturday at 6 p.m. at Frans and the series finale is Sunday at 3 p.m.

Willie Abreau and Max George each had two hits for Asheville and Robbie Perkins, in the second inning, hit his second home run of the season.

Alex Kowalczyk had two hits and an RBI for the Crawdads (18-30), who had nine hits, and Miguel Aparicio had a triple among his two hits.

Tourists starter Alejandro Requena got a win after going seven innings. He allowed eight hits, two runs (one earned) with no walks and four strikeouts. J.D. Hammer pitched the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

Sal Mendez (3-1) took the loss for the Crawdads after going six innings. He allowed eight hits, three runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.
