COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne goes 1-1 on opening day of season

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Lenoir-Rhyne University opened its women’s volleyball season on Friday with a split.

Saint Leo beat the Bears 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 in their first match of the season in the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational.

LRU defeated American International in its second match Friday, winning 25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 25-27 and 17-15.

The Bears play twice Saturday, against Nova Southeastern at 2 p.m. and against Saint Anselm at 7 p.m.

Saint Leo got 15 kills by Ashley Quero and 31 assists and nine digs by Anna Garrett to beat the Bears.

Freshman outsider hitter Taylor Prall had 10 kills for LRU and senior outside hitter Brooke Redmond had 14 kills and six digs.

Prall led the Bears in their victory over American International with 18 kills and 13 digs. Redmond added 16 kills and 16 digs.

LRU had 16 blocks in the win while junior defensive specialist Bailey Cloninger posted 32 assists and 11 digs.

Diva Rivas-Reyes led American International with 23 kills, Jana Potic had 17 kills and Dolores Kopren provided 60 assists.
