HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College has signed three more players == including its first from a West Coast high school – to play women’s college volleyball next season.

The Red Hawks have added Sophie Brennan from Eugene, Ore., plus Bre Myers from North Buncombe and North Henderson’s Zoe Phillips.

Brennan is a 5-foot-7 setter from Williamette High.

“How exciting to have a setter coming all the way from Oregon?” CVCC head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson said in a CVCC press release. “Sophie is a solid, athletic player and her addition to the roster will help us round out the setter position.

“We have strong setters returning, but we wanted to add a few freshmen to the mix so they could learn the offensive system and be ready to contribute to our 6-2 system that we plan to run in the fall.”

Brennan, whose father works in Charlotte, contacted Hudson about the opportunity to play volleyball for the Red Hawks.

“We’ve only met in person once for her official visit, but our entire staff and team loved Sophie and appreciated her work ethic on the court,” Hudson said. “I’m looking forward to getting to know her even better next fall.”

Brennan was a team captain last season for the her high school under head coach Tom Shrum, leading the program to 10 wins and a 6A playoff appearance.

On top of her prep career, Brennan played club volleyball for the Webfoot Juniors under head coach Damon Woke.

MYERS

Phillips, a senior middle hitter at North Henderson, tallied 145 kills, 48 blocks and 29 aces last season. She added 262 digs defensively for the Knights, who reached the state 3A playoffs.

In three prep seasons, Phillips was a part of 46 wins, including a 20-3 record her junior year.

“Zoey has a composure and steadiness on the court that I really admire,” Hudson said. “She is consistent and smart with the ball and works hard to minimize unforced errors on offense…”

A libero and defensive specialist, Myers was an all-conference pick the last two seasons at North Buncombe, which won 27 matches and advanced to the state playoffs twice.

“Bre is a hard-working defender who reads the hitter very well,” Hudson said. “I’m looking forward to having her ball control in serve receive and knowing that her competitive energy will make a huge impact on the court.”

The trio of new signees join a 2018 recruiting class that includes Alexander Central’s Kelsea DeJarnette and Chesney Millsaps, Fred T. Foard’s Jayln Rice, First Assembly Christian’s Anna Clarke, St. Stephens’ Madison Bolch, Watauga’s Emma Clark, West Iredell’s Macy Pope and West Stokes’ Rachel Delcamp and Abigail Gordon.
