HICKORY – Freshman Zharia Brown had her first double-double for Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) on Monday night, leading the Red Hawks past the Belmont Abbey College junior varsity 72-50.

Brown scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Shaniya Lester added 19 points as CVCC improved to 7-1 with a home victory and won its sixth straight game.

The Red Hawks surged ahead 22-3 after the first quarter with seven players scoring.

Nosoja Echevarria, who paced Belmont Abbey with 17 points, scored seven points in the second quarter to help the Crusaders outscore the Red Hawks 15-12 in the quarter.

CVCC continued to lead 34-18 at halftime, led by sophomore guard Tory Agrusa’s nine first-half points.

In the second half, the Red Hawks capitalized on 13 Crusaders turnovers and outscored them 38-32.

CVCC sophomore forward Tanisha Wall also reached double figures with 13 points and added seven rebounds.

The Red Hawks’ next game is Sunday at home, a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. against the Mount Olive junior varsity.
