HICKORY – Nikkyana McCaskill and Shaniya Lester combined for 37 points on Friday, sparking a 69-50 victory by the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women in basketball.
McCaskill scored 19 points and Lester added 18 as the Red Hawks, playing at home, improved to 2-1 overall by beating Brunswick Community College in the first conference game of the season for both schools.
CVCC trailed 17-16 after one quarter, but quickly erased that deficit behind six points in the second quarter from Lester.
The Red Hawks led 38-29 at halftime.
In the second half, CVCC extended its lead — paced by eight points each from Lester and McCaskill – as McCaskill finished with three 3-pointers in five attempts.
Danielle Brisson paced Brunswick (1-2, 0-1) with 11 points.
CVCC’s next game in Sunday at 6 p.m. when it plays the Belmont Abbey junior varsity in Belmont.
