WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lester becomes first CVCC player to clear 1,000 career points in Sunday win

SMITHFIELD – It was a record-setting day for Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) in women’s basketball on Sunday.

With sophomore Shaniya Lester scoring 17 points to become the first male or female Red Hawks player to reach 1,000 points in a career, CVCC beat Johnston Community College 80-37 on the road.

Lester cleared the historic mark in the first quarter by making a free throw.

CVCC improved to 25-5 overall by winning and closed at 20-2 in Region X.

The Red Hawks will play in the conference tournament beginning on Thursday in Lenoir, with an opponent and game time to be announced.

On Sunday, Tanisha Wall also had 17 points for CVCC in its victory, and Nikkyana McCaskill added 13.

The Red Hawks led 15-10 after one quarter and outscored the Jaguars 19-5 in the second quarter to led 34-15 by halftime.

Ariana Huskey paced the Jaguars (9-19, 3-19) with 16 points.
