HENDERSON – Freshman Dorieon Suggs scored a career-high 14 points on Tuesday night, leading Catawba Valley Community College’s men to an 88-83 victory over Vance-Granville and snapping a three-game basketball losing streak.
Playing at the Aycock Recreational Complex, Suggs added five rebounds and three steals and drew threw charges in a victory that lifted visiting CVCC to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in Region X.
Suggs is a 6-foot-3 forward from Snow Hill.
Steve Ruszala, a 6-7 sophomore forward from Waxhaw, had his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Hawks.
Sophomore Caleb Bryson, a guard from Blowing Rock, flirted with a triple-double for CVCC with 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
CVCC led 44-42 at the half, and the Red Hawks opened a 68-58 lead with eight minutes, 16 seconds to play.
Vance-Granville (0-15, 0-9) closed within 85-83 with 17 seconds to play.
After a missed 3-point by Calvin Manley was rebounded by CVCC’s Tyrell Olgesby, the Red Hawks hung on to win.
CVCC’s next game, scheduled Wednesday at Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach, Va., has been postponed without a new playing date yet determined.
The Red Hawks are scheduled to play at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Lenoir-Community College, and admission is free at the Tarlton Complex.
