HICKORY – Breaking triple digits for the third time this season, the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) men beat visiting Vance-Granville 107-87 on Tuesday night.

Freshman Tyrell Oglesby scored a career-high 29 points — including 18 in the first half — to help the Red Hawks (10-15, 5-11 Region X) gain a 53-40 lead at halftime.

Bernard Gregory and Kenneth Finley Jr. scored 21 and 19 points, respectively, to lead Vance-Granville (1-21, 0-15).

Eleven 3-pointers helped keep the Vanguard within striking distance of the Red Hawks.

Oglesby’s performance combined with Steve Ruszala’s 18 points and 10 rebounds and Myles William’s 15 points allowed the Red Hawks to snap a three-game skid.

Ruszala’s double-double is his fifth of the season and seventh of his career.

A slam dunk by Ruszala with three minutes, 45 seconds to play helped the Red Hawks score 100 points for the second time in their last five games.

The Red Hawks’ next game is Saturday, a 3 p.m. start on “Sophomore Day” at the Tarlton Complex against Louisburg College.
