MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Red Hawks add Grantham as assistant coach

HICKORY – Matt Grantham, a second generation basketball coach from Jacksonville, N.C., was hired Wednesday as an assistant coach for men’s basketball at Catawba Valley Community College.

In a press release, Red Hawks men’s head coach Bryan Garmroth announced Grantham will join the CVCC staff after two seasons as an assistant coach at North Carolina Wesleyan University.

Grantham, an East Carolina graduate, played high school basketball at White Oak for his dad, Greg.

“We are very excited to have Matt join us at CVCC,” Garmroth said in the press release. “He is a young and very enthusiastic coach. His work ethic and energy level are second to none, and he will be a huge asset to our program.

“He has worked the last two years for John Thompson at North Carolina Wesleyan. Coach Thompson is a great coach and highly respected across the country.”

During his two years at North Carolina Wesleyan, Grantham helped lead the Battling Bishops to a 2017-18 East Division regular-season championship in the USA South tournament. The team had four all-conference players and the league’s Rookie of the Year during those two seasons.

“Matt not only brings a lot of basketball knowledge, but he is a recruiting warrior,” Garmroth said. “In his two years at North Carolina Wesleyan, he has developed a lot of recruiting relationships. We are very fortunate to have him at CVCC.”

Matt Grantham was a team manager for ECU men’s basketball program while pursuing his undergraduate studies, including a major in Psychology and minor in business management.

He also has experience working with major college basketball camps, including those at North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State and Maryland.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to join coach Garmroth’s staff at Catawba Valley,” Matt Grantham said. “He is a proven veteran that has coached at every level of college basketball.

“I look forward to learning all I can from him, as well as applying my own knowledge and experience to help our program compete at a championship level.”
