PETERSBURG, Va. – Scoring 23 unanswered points in a first-half surge, Guilford Tech eliminated Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) from the Region X men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, winning 103-79.

The eighth-seeded Titans (13-15) got a season-high 35 points from Eric Peaks to advance to a Sunday quarterfinal, also at Richard Bland College, against top-seeded Louisburg College (25-4).

CVCC finished 10-20 overall after going 5-15 in the region to gain the No. 9 seed for the tournament.

Tyrell Oglesby and Isayah Johnson powered the Red Hawks in their final game of the season. Johnson had a career-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Oglesby also registered a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

CVCC kept pace with Guilford Tech until the Titans generated a 23-0 run that included 10 points from Peaks and grabbed control.

The Red Hawks were scoreless during a six-minute, 45-second stretch during that run by Guilford Tech.

Down 53-29 at halftime, Oglesby and Johnson tried to power the Red Hawks back in the second half. They combined for 29 of the Red Hawks’ 43 second-half points.

Saturday’s game was the final in the careers of four CVCC sophomores — guards Caleb Bryson, Myles Williams and Dante Starr and forward Steve Ruszala.
