HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College’s women’s volleyball team will play a home match on Aug. 29 dedicated to supporting head coach Shannon Hudson’s uncle in his battle with cancer.

The Red Hawks are calling the Stand Up Against Cancer event “Pray for Clay” and they will face USC-Lancaster at 6 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex.

The event is in honor of Clay Goodson.

Goodson, 45, originally believed he had a severe sinus infection mass in his neck several months ago. But when his symptoms worsened, he was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he received a severe diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Doctors also discovered a second mass in his chest between his heart and lungs.

The discovery prompted Shannon Hudson to take action.

“After I found out about Clay’s diagnosis, I wanted to do something to help,” Hudson said in a press release by CVCC distributed Monday. “We typically do a ‘Dig Pink’ Breast Cancer Awareness event with our volleyball team, so I talked to our girls, and we decided to switch things up this year and host an event that would bring awareness to all different types of cancer with our focus this year being on Lymphoma.”

Music artist Brooke Caldwell will perform the national anthem before CVCC’s match against the Lancers.

After the match, the Red Hawks will recognize families who are battling or have battled cancer and also those families who have lost a loved one from the disease – presenting all of these families with flowers.

Caldwell will also perform after the match, and a special video presentation of Clay Hudson with his family will be shown.

CVCC’s volleyball program is accepting donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their satellite office in Charlotte.
