COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Red Hawks add former Alexander Central star to coaching staff

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) has made its second hire for the coaching staff in women’s softball.

After signing their first three players, the Red Hawks announced Friday they’ll have former Alexander Central High and Erskine College standout Mia Blochaviak serving as an assistant coach.

Blochaviak (pronounced: blow-vee-ack) played at Erskine from 2015-18 as a middle infielder and outfielder with a career batting average of .306.

“It is very exciting for us to bring in a high caliber athlete like Mia to our staff,” CVCC head coach Josh Bumgarner said in a press release. “She is a very knowledgeable and hardworking individual and our players will benefit greatly from her coaching.”

Blochaviak was named team Defensive Player of the Year omn 2016 as well as making the All-Carolinas Conference team.

At Alexander Central, she played four years and was on three state title teams, including an unbeaten squad in 2014.

As a senior, Blochaviak was All-District and All-State. As a prep junior, she was on All-District, All-State, the first teams of the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and All-South. She was also the MVP in the state title series for the Cougars as a junior.

Blochaviak lives in Taylorsville and is working on her master’s degree in Forensic Psychology at NOVA Southeastern University.
