HICKORY – Keykey Miller, who averaged 13.3 points and 4.3 rebounds last season for Alexander Central High, has signed to play basketball for Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).

Miller, a 5-foot-5 guard, signed on Friday, a press release from CVCC athletics said on Tuesday.

“It’s a blessing to be able to play at the next level,” Miller said in the press release. “I’m excited for the season to start and to be able to prepare to move on to a four-year afterwards.

“It doesn’t feel real that I’m about to play college basketball, but I’m excited and nervous because all eyes are going to be on me.”

A two-time All-Northwestern 3A-4A pick, Miller was a captain for the Cougars last season under head coach Jonathan Winkler. She played three seasons on varsity.

Miller finished her prepr career with 650 points, 245 rebounds, 86 assists and 89 steals.

“I’m excited to have her,” England said of Miller in the press release. “I saw her throughout the year, and she’s just a go-getter. I love her attitude. She’s very coachable and very respectful.

“We are needing kids that come in and want to learn more of the game and get better. She’s going to bring great assets to the team with her quickness and with her ball handling. She can shoot. I’m excited about having her come be a part of our program.”

Miller came to the Red Hawks’ try outs last month, which allowed England to get a better look.

“I first found out about the try outs from my aunt,” Miller said. “She was telling me that I should go and try out. I came, and that’s when I met coach (Tisha) England for the first time.

“She was very welcoming. Coming in and meeting the players, they were also welcoming. Working out was tough, but I knew they were all about business.”

Miller’s travel coach, Cleon Cook, was also a key voice in pushing Miller to try out at CVCC.

She is the first recruit for the 2018-19 class at CVCC.

The Red Hawks were 27-5 overall and 20-2 in Region X last season.
