BASEBALL: Red Hawks catcher Smith wins Golden Glove award

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College has a Gold Glove player for the third straight season, sophomore catcher Riley Smith.

Smith, who played high school baseball at Alexander Central, won a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)/Rawlings Gold Glove, the school announced in a Wednesday press release.

The Gold Glove team has one player selected at each position.

Smith, who played last season at CVCC after transferring from UNC Asheville, has signed to play next season at Appalachian State.

He played 53 games this season for the Red Hawks, posting a team-best 275 putouts in 298 chances with 21 assists and only two errors (.993 field percentage).

Smith’s fielding percentage was best nationally among NJCAA catchers who had at least 150 fielding chances. He also had the best runners caught stealing percentage (.333) in Region 10 and had only three passed balls.
