WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Red Hawks start season ranked No. 16

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) was ranked No. 16 in the first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II women’s basketball poll released on Monday.

The Red Hawks are ranked in the preseason for the first time since that sat No. 4 on Oct. 28, 2013.

CVCC opens the season Nov. 8, playing the Montreat College JV team on the road at 7:30 p.m., and the first home game is Nov. 13 against Clinton College at 5 p.m.

“I’m excited for the Lady Red Hawks to be ranked in the nation,” CVCC head women’s basketball coach Tisha England said in a CVCC press release. “We have established a rich program of heart, warriors and student-athletes. We work hard to excel in every area on the court as well as in the classroom.”

The Red Hawks are coming off a record-setting season in which they finished 26-6 overall and 20-2 in Region X play. They broke program season records for games played (32), most points scored (2,597) and most assists (587).
