HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) has signed two volleyball players for its 2019 recruiting class, one from Stokes County and one from Cabarrus County.

The Red Hawks’ athletic department announced the signings via a press release.

Lilly Weaver, a 5-foot-8 outside hitter from South Stokes High, and Amber Baker, who played for the Greater Cabarrus Stallions, will join the Red Hawks.

At South Stokes, Weaver had a team-high 33 kills, plus 32 aces, 11 blocks and 416 digs for a 19-8 team that reached the state playoffs.

“Lily is a smart and seasoned hitter who will add depth to our fall roster at that position,” CVCC head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson said in the press release. “Lily is a competitor and a smart player who sees the court well. I’m excited to see how she continues to develop as a player this season.”

Weaver is also a four-time all-conference selection in the Northwest 1A and Western Piedmont 2A conferences, and she and all-conference tournament player as a senir.

“Lilly is one of the most dedicated volleyball players I have coached,” South Stokes head volleyball coach Jayson Duncan said in the press release. “She leads with actions and words. Her hard work made South volleyball better while she was here and in the future.

“We have players that look up to her work ethic and positive attitude. She will be a great asset to the CVCC volleyball program and the school community.”

Baker helped lead the Stallions to a 47-11 overall record in her three seasons, including a 15-5 last season.

“Amber brings athleticism and a nice vertical to an already talented front row for our team this fall,” Hudson said. “Amber’s versatility as a setter and hitter make her an invaluable asset and I’m looking forward to watching her grow her game in our offense.”

A setter and right side, Baker helped the Stallions post three top-three finishes in the state, including first place as a sophomore in 2016, third place as a junior and second place as a senior.

“The first time she stepped onto the court, I knew she was going to be a great player,” said Stallions head volleyball coach Lee Dupre. “Amber is an all-around player and a great teammate that leads by example.

“She works hard to master the game of volleyball, which allows her to excel in any position she plays.”

Weaver and Baker join a team coming off a 36-10 season that includes winning three matches – a first for CVCC — after qualifying for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II tournament.
