HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) has signed another softball player for its first-time team, inking a standout from Florida.

The Red Hawks announced Tuesday their recruiting class has reached 16 with the signing of right-handed pitcher Josie McCrea from Booker (Fla.) High.

CVCC head coach Josh Bumgarner discovered McCrea through a recruiting website, and he was immediately impressed by McCrea and reached out to her.

“Josie is a hard worker and extremely competitive,” Bumgarner said in a CVCC press release. “She wants to win every time she’s on the field.

“She gives us another arm in the circle to help solidify our pitching staff. We have high expectations for Josie and look forward to getting her on the field soon.”

A three-year varsity standout at Booker, McCrea led the Tornadoes to 11 wins last spring that included an 8-0 record in 5A District 11 play for the first time in 25 years.

McCrea started her senior season in February by striking out a school-record 19 in the first game of the season against St. Petersburg Northside Christian School.

She finished her senior season with 208 strikeouts in 112 innings.

McCrea also hit .527 with 52 hits (nine doubles, three triples, one home run), 15 runs scored and 14 RBIs. She also recorded a .629 on-base percentage and a .854 slugging percentage.

During her junior and senior prep seasons, McCrea won 17 games, striking out 289 in 167 innings while also recording a .981 fielding percentage. She also hit .517 with 46 hits, 22 runs scored and 32 RBIs during those two seasons.

CVCC’s first softball team begins championship contention in the spring of 2020.
