COLLEGE BASEBALL: Red Hawks win twice over Limestone’s junior varsity

NEWTON – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) scored 16 unanswered runs in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, completing a sweep of the Limestone junior varsity.

The Red Hawks won the opening game 9-4 at the Legion Fairgrounds and wiped out a one-run deficit in the second game en route to a 16-4 victory.

CVCC (15-7) — ranked No. 17 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll — next plays on Saturday in the first of three weekend conference games at Wake Tech in Raleigh. There are two games Saturday, the first at 1 p.m., and the series finale on Sunday has a noon start.

CVCC 9, Limestone JVs 4

The Red Hawks pulled ahead by six runs through five innings and held off a late charge by the Saints.

David Graves, Kyran Russ and Cory Watt each hit a home run for CVCC. Graves drove in a team-high three runs, while Russ and Graham Mitchell each drove in two runs.

Brett Macchia, Garrison Burress, Watt and Graves all had two hits and the Red Hawks had 11 hits.

CVCC starting pitcher Matthew Dailey earned his first win of the season, giving up just one hit, one walk and striking out five in three innings.

The Red Hawks’ Hunter Isaacs, Ryan Bradley and Chris Banks closed out the game in relief, giving up five hits, four runs (three earned), three walks, and the trio struck out five.

CVCC 16, Limestone JVs 4

After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, the Red Hawks answered with 16 straight runs en route to a five-inning, run-rule victory.

Graves, Tyler Campbell and Jimmy Marcelli paced the Red Hawks, each driving in four runs.

Marcelli had a team-high three hits, while Graves and Campbell each tallied two hits. Campbell also connected on his second home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning.

CVCC scored three runs in the first inning, five in the second inning, one in the third inning and seven in the fourth inning.

Red Hawks starting pitcher Thomas Walden earned a win, allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk and he struck out four.

Chase Covington and Will Angel pitched in relief of Walden, combining to allow one hit, two earned runs, three walks and striking out two.
