NEWTON — Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) — fresh off adding to its 20-win season but also trying to rebound from a one-run, walk-off loss on Sunday – has a home game on Tuesday.

The Red Hawks (22-12, 9-5 Region X) face Rockingham Community College in a non-league game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Legion Fairgrounds.

CVCC, ranked No. 17 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll, played three games over the weekend in Martinsville, Va., against Patrick Henry Community College and won two of them.

On Sunday, Patrick Henry won 5-4 and CVCC won 15-1 in five innings and 2-0 in seven innings on Saturday.

Patrick Henry, down by two runs, tied it at 4 in the bottom of the ninth inning when Chris Brady hit a home run to score Christian Easley, who walked with one out.

The Patriots (14-12, 8-4) won on Paul Wise’s walk-off single to right field with the bases loaded. Brandon Cleveland singled, Gavin Trippett walked and Clayton Nestor was hit by a pitch before Wise came to the plate.

CVCC had a 2-0 lead until Chandler Kelley’s two-out single in the fourth inning scored Wise and Nestor. A wild pitch with the bases loaded and a single by Willie Gordon drove in the first runs for CVCC.

The Red Hawks scored to regain the lead via a pinch-hit double by Rod Munoz that led to a run-scoring sacrifice fly by R.J. Conner.

CVCC’s lead then grew to 4-2 in the top of the ninth inning when Grant Tilley drew a bases-full walk.

Red Hawks starter Trae Starnes kept Patrick Henry in check early. A sophomore from Taylorsville, he allowed just three hits, two unearned runs, walked one and struck out five in four innings.

Logan Bender tossed his third complete game of the season, striking out 12, to lead the Red Hawks as they registered their fourth shutout win of the year.

Bender (5-0) allowed just three hits and one walk.

CVCC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Tilley drove in Tyler Campbell on a single to right field.

That early lead allowed Bender, a red-shirt sophomore from Dunn, to settle in. He retired the first six batters on strikeouts, including the first three on just 10 pitches.

The game featured only eight hits and 21 strikeouts between Bender and Patrick Henry starting pitcher Bradley Hanner.

The Patriots had runners at second and third base in the fourth inning but did not score. A deep fly ball to right field with one out by Danny Hosley appeared it would score the tying run but CVCC right fielder Vinny Consolo threw out pinch-runner Sterling Christian at the plate.

After snuffing out another potential rally by Patrick Henry in the fifth inning on a double play, Consolo again come up big by scoring a late insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.

Consolo was hit by a pitch leading off the seventh inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Lyda. Consolo later scored on an error by Wise at first base.

The Patriots had two runners on with one put before Bender enticed an infield fly out and a swinging strike out to end the game.

The Red Hawks capitalized on eight hits, eight walks and four Patriots errors to win the opening game of the series.

The Red Hawks scored a run in the first inning and three in the second and fifth innings.

Lyda added two runs scored and three RBIs, while center fielder Malik Stephens drove in two runs and scored two runs.
