COLLEGE BASEBALL: Off to 5-5 start, Red Hawks have weekend series at home against Pitt

NEWTON – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) has a home weekend baseball series against Pitt Community College that begins with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Red Hawks (5-5) face the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. at the Legion Fairgrounds, where the teams also play a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.

CVCC is coming off being swept in a doubleheader on Wednesday by USC Lancaster on the road and has lost four straight games.

Bo Owens launched a two-run walk-off homer, lifting the Lancers to their sixth straight victory.

CVCC led 1-0 early on an RBI single from R.J. Conner in the top of the third inning, but USC Lancaster tied it in the bottom of the third via a run-scoring single by Todd Mattox.

With a run in the fourth inning – Willie Gordon reached on an error that scoed Trent Jones – CVCC had a lead.

The Lancers used a two-run single by Dylan Jones to go in front.

Run-scoring singles by Grant Tilley and Jackson Brown put CVCC back ahead.

Reliever Nic Messina retired the first two batters before walking Mattox and then surrendered Owen’s home run.

USC Lancaster 12, CVCC 6, 7 inn. (Wednesday)

The Lancers capitalized on 11 hits and five Red Hawk errors to complete a sweep.

USC Lancaster scored all of its runs in the first four innings, including two in the first, six in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth, building a 12-2 lead.

Lancers shortstop Walker McDowell had a three-run home run in the second inning and a two-run home run in the third inning.

CVCC scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings on run-scoring singles by Tyler Campbell.
